The Salt Lake County Shorelands Plan completes the ring of studies surrounding the Great Salt Lake conducted over the last two years. It is the link between management plans created by Tooele County, Davis County, and Box Elder County to protect the wetlands and hydrology of the region while allowing development where appropriate and needed. This project is unique in starting with a visioning process, then moving toward an implementable Special Area Management Plan.
The Project Area
Including a large portion of western Salt Lake City the project area extends from Davis County south to Interstate 80 and from Tooele County east to the Jordan River and I-215. The Project Area Map illustrates the geographical location. Agricultural uses and large expanses of undeveloped land comprise the unincorporated portions of the project area. A large amount of land is privately held by several duck clubs located north of the Salt Lake City International Airport. There are also a number of Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) found within the Salt Lake County Shorelands Project. Included is the Inland Sea Shorebird Reserve and the Gillmor Bird Sanctuary.
The project area continues south of I-80 to State Highway 201 (2100 South) encompassing approximately 8,000 acres of land located between 4000 West and 8800 West. Much of this area is in private ownership with increasing industrial development.
